The JEE application

The JEE application I found cannot be filled online from a country outside India. Take a print of the form fill it in pencil then go and fill it online.

The JEE paper Exam

You should enter your Exam No. on the paper in pencil and then only overwrite it using pen. The exam number is the link between you and paper.

JEE Mains And Advanced - What to take for the exam

My suggestion is prefer online exam to paper and pencil exam.

If you choose paper and pencil exam then on your answer paper first fill in all the details in pencil and overwrite the same with pen.

For both exams carry with you 2 lit of water + 1 lit sugar drink like Tang etc. The JEE advanced is held in May 3rd week when it is hottest. The exam lasts 6 hours so the entire day is occupied. Having sufficient water is a must.

JEE Main and Advanced - Books for preparation

Following are some books I suggest one should consider for your ward:
1. Arihant 35 years JEE papers

2. Maths
SL Loney Trigonometry Part 1
SL Loney Coordinate Geometry - Part 1
Higher Algebra - Hall & Knight
GB Thomas - Calculus and Analytical Geometry

3. Physics
HC Verma + Solutions
DC Pandey Mechanics
Heat and Thermodynamics
Electricity and Magnetism
Optics and Modern Physics

4. Chemistry
Physical Chemistry - Awasthi & Jaiswal
Organic Chemistry - Jagdamba Singh

You could also consider following books:
Organic Chemistry - MS Chauhan
Organic Chemistry - Morrison & Boyd
Organic Chemistry - Solomon
Inorganic Chemistry - JD Lee
Problems in Physics -  I E Irodov

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT)

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has it's main branch at Vellore. It has a branch in Chennai.
You need to go to personally to either Chennai or Vellore for the counselling. They call you according to VITEE rank. The 1st counselling is held before the JEE Advanced exam so mostly only parents only go. Hardly any student from the top ranks was seen during first counselling. Although they say a good reason has to be given for student not being present, there was no emphasis at all on the reason why a student was not present. So my advise to all parents is if their ward is appearing for any other entrance or considering any other college only parent can travel. If student is not present parents require to fill an additional form that's all.
If you are travelling from North India better to go to Chennai Campus. Its more accessible than Vellore.
The affidavit format has admission number which can be kept blank as that is not known only application number is known.
Among first 1000 ranks only about 70 turned up in the 1st phase of counselling in 2014.

VIT does not have a waitlist. People are called rankwise they can choose a branch that is available.

A. The 2014-2015 B. Tech Admission Refund policy was pasted on a notice board at the time of counselling. I noted it down by hand which is as follows:

1. If a candidate is not eligible entire fees will be refunded after deducting 1000 Rs.
2. If candidate withdraws within 1 month of course starting admission fee Rs. 10, 000 + special fee will not be refunded.
3. within 2 months admission fee + 20000 + special fee will not be refunded.
4. Beyond 2 months no refund.
5. Before commencement 10,000 will be deducted.

B. Hostel admission
For hostel admission one has to pay 21,000 at the time of counselling. Then for the hostel room allotment one has to pay the entire year's fee for hostel accommodation + mess charges.
All students of first year are given hostel accommodation.

Following are some notes on Hostel Admission

1. Demand draft for Rs. 21,000 is required for hostel accommodation reservation.
2. Write Student Name, Application Number on back of demand draft
3. Balance hostel fee including mess fee as per the students first choice (VIT website gives the detailed fee structure) shall be sent to the Chief Warden on or before 12th June 2014 for room confirmation.
4. Room allotment will be confirmed on receipt of full payment of tuition fee and hostel. Earlier fees payment will enhance the chance of getting room as per choice.
5. Room allotment will be based on VITEE rank and availability.
6. Excess/refund of hostel fees if different room type is allotted will be done after joining the hostel.
7. Withdrawal of hostel admission shall be made in writing to Chief Warden on or before 12th June 2014
8. Refund of hostel advance will be made within 30 days after deducting Rs. 1000 towards hostel counseling charges.
9. After joining hostel any student opting to withdraw hostel admission will be refunded with hostel fees within 30 days deducting the hostel admission fee and proportionate hostel rent and mess charges.
10. Those who did not bring the hostel advance fee on the day of counselling can send the full hostel fee later directly to the chief warden on or before 5 June 2014 to ensure room reservation. The DD should be in favour of "VIT University, Chennai" if Chennai.
11. Students should report to the hostel just one day before the day of starting of classes. Rooms will not be available anytime before that. Also plan your arrival at hostel during working hours preferably.

Withdrawal of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) Admission

VIT conducts their exam before everybody else. They conduct their counseling around mid May before the JEE advanced examination which is last week of May. Parents are in a dilemma on what to do. VIT has a very good ranking so if your ward scores well it appears a good idea to take admission. The last date for payment of fees is even before the JEE Advanced results so with so much uncertainty one takes admission. I guess they are cashing in on insecurity of parents. VIT takes all the fees for entire year tuition related, hostel related and mess related which adds to a considerable amount.
I was almost sure my son would go to VIT Vellore. My son felt another college he got admission would be preferable. I went through the task of withdrawing admission for my son. I would like to share my experience as mentioned below.

I started the withdrawal process on 14 July and the money was received in my bank account on 4th August. Over all I found my experience very good with VIT. They have been fair. They only cut counseling fee (10000 INR) and part of Hostel reservation fee (1000 INR). I would have been happy even if my son continued studying in VIT. My son preferred another good institute so had to withdraw.

There is no need to go personally for withdrawing admission you can also do it remotely. Start as early as possible. The rules for deduction have been listed in my earlier post on VIT.
To know the procedure for withdrawal I called the phones listed on their website several times on different days
+91 416 220 2168 and +91 416 220 2125 - Nobody picked up the phone.

I called the number +91 416 220 4600 nobody responded.

I called up +91 416 220 4700 which is international admissions. A lady answered and informed she cannot discuss anything if its not related to international admissions. On requesting that I am not able to reach out to anybody she gave me a number +91 416 220 4500. This is not there on their site but a gentleman picked up. When I made my request to withdraw he said "We had told you not to take admission if you were not sure. Now all admissions have been closed do you know?" I only apologised. The gentleman said "Send your letter then we will consider". Later many calls to this number were not picked up.
So I sent separate letters to Chief admissions officer and Chief Warden

I called a number given on their website for hostel related admission to request withdrawal. Twice somebody picked up I did not get any satisfactory answer. There are many numbers on their website but it's not sure whom to contact. Based on my experience it is better to do the follow through e-mail once you have sent hard copies of the above letters.

Only two mailIDs I received a response after several request mails are as follows:
For  Director UG admissions: ugadmission@vit.ac.in
For Hostel Chief Warden Men's hostel: cw.mh@vit.ac.in
