VIT conducts their exam before everybody else. They conduct their counseling around mid May before the JEE advanced examination which is last week of May. Parents are in a dilemma on what to do. VIT has a very good ranking so if your ward scores well it appears a good idea to take admission. The last date for payment of fees is even before the JEE Advanced results so with so much uncertainty one takes admission. I guess they are cashing in on insecurity of parents. VIT takes all the fees for entire year tuition related, hostel related and mess related which adds to a considerable amount.
I was almost sure my son would go to VIT Vellore. My son felt another college he got admission would be preferable. I went through the task of withdrawing admission for my son. I would like to share my experience as mentioned below.
I started the withdrawal process on 14 July and the money was received in my bank account on 4th August. Over all I found my experience very good with VIT. They have been fair. They only cut counseling fee (10000 INR) and part of Hostel reservation fee (1000 INR). I would have been happy even if my son continued studying in VIT. My son preferred another good institute so had to withdraw.
There is no need to go personally for withdrawing admission you can also do it remotely. Start as early as possible. The rules for deduction have been listed in my earlier post on VIT.
To know the procedure for withdrawal I called the phones listed on their website several times on different days
+91 416 220 2168 and +91 416 220 2125 - Nobody picked up the phone.
I called the number +91 416 220 4600 nobody responded.
I called up +91 416 220 4700 which is international admissions. A lady answered and informed she cannot discuss anything if its not related to international admissions. On requesting that I am not able to reach out to anybody she gave me a number +91 416 220 4500. This is not there on their site but a gentleman picked up. When I made my request to withdraw he said "We had told you not to take admission if you were not sure. Now all admissions have been closed do you know?" I only apologised. The gentleman said "Send your letter then we will consider". Later many calls to this number were not picked up.
So I sent separate letters to Chief admissions officer and Chief Warden

I called a number given on their website for hostel related admission to request withdrawal. Twice somebody picked up I did not get any satisfactory answer. There are many numbers on their website but it's not sure whom to contact. Based on my experience it is better to do the follow through e-mail once you have sent hard copies of the above letters.
Only two mailIDs I received a response after several request mails are as follows:
For Director UG admissions: ugadmission@vit.ac.in
For Hostel Chief Warden Men's hostel: cw.mh@vit.ac.in
